June 2010 - Oldcastle Precast, a leader in the precast concrete industry, and DEGERenergie, the leader in the manufacture of sensor-controlled solar tracking systems, teamed up to provide a unique system that utilized a octagonal precast foundation with a dual axis solar tracking system for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley and Chandler, AZ.
Oldcastle Precast approached DEGERenergie to offer a more efficient solution for their solar tower foundation system. Larry Miller, Structural Engineer for Oldcastle Precast NSME presented Oldcastle Precast’s innovative, octagonal ballasted solar foundation for dual axis tracking systems. ”The precast ballasted foundations are lighter by 10,000 lbs, use 50% less reinforcing and the entire system can be installed in two (2) days including the racking and panels, whereas cast in place has an additional 14-28 day cure time.” stated Mr. Miller”
DEGERenergie was very impressed with Oldcastle’s foundation system and suggested that Oldcastle supply the foundations for a solar panel project they were doing for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley and Chandler, AZ. Oldcastle Precast redesigned and engineered the octagonal ballasted solar foundation for the project and teamed up with BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, to came up with a very unique way to secure the solar array onto the foundation. (Typically the mast is bolted to the foundation).
“The project went very smoothly and everyone is very happy with the end result”, stated Miller. “Due to its success, DEGERenergie has selected the Boys & Girls Clubs project as a show piece for all of their training and marketing in the United States. This success will lead to future work with DEGER in North America.”
