What is Stormwater Harvesting?
Oldcastle Precast's StormCapture Harvesting System is a total stormwater management system. Water harvesting is the collection, storage, cleaning and recycling of stormwater to replace or reduce the consumption of municipal potable water. Harvesting provides a return on investment in stormwater management while meeting regulatory compliance and potentially reducing fees and/or earning incentives.

Why harvest Stormwater?

Recognized as "Green" building practice, it can assist in points towards LEED credits for Sustainable Sites and Water Efficiency as well as being a sustainable building design and Low Impact Development (LID) practice. Lastly, harvesting is good environmental stewardship and may provide higher resale value on the property.

  • Lower your building’s operational expenses by harvesting stormwater and rainwater. Take what is free to offset something you have to buy.
  • StormCapture can add LEED points for your project, under the U.S. Green Building Council guidelines.
  • Meet Low Impact Development (LID) requirements. The new environmentally friendly development trend is for post-construction runoff volume to be the same or less than predevelopment runoff volume.
  • Protect the environment. Clean, fresh water is a limited natural resource. We have the same amount of water on earth now as when the dinosaurs were here. We need it to live and we use it in the production of many consumable products.

Harvested Stormwater Applications

For commercial office buildings, shopping centers and schools, harvested stormwater can typically be used in over 80% of the potable water usage applications. For hospitals and restaurants, harvested water usage can be in the 3-50% range.

Oldcastle Precast and Wahaso provide a complete packaged StormCapture Harvesting System. Our services include:

  • Scoping -gathering information, completing a water analysis to evaluate potential water uses, sources, and most efficient cistern size, and preliminary budgetary cost.
  • Design and Specifications.-develop a detailed system design with drawings and specifications.
  • Fabrication-preassembly and testing of the equipment package on skids prior to shipping to project site.
  • Installation, Testing, & Training-installation manuals and onsite technical assistance are provided to plumbing contractor for system installation. Onsite technical assistance is also available for startup and training.

Eliminate the issues created with discharging stormwater offsite by using a StormCapture exfiltration system to infiltrate stormwater into the soil for natural treatment and to replenish local aquifers.

PermeCapture combines the advantages and versatility of StormCapture structural precast concrete underground storage modules with the aesthetics and performance of Belgard permeable interlocking concrete pavers to provide a standalone maintainable, LID green solution for total stormwater management.

Realize the full potential of your permeable interlocking concrete paver surface treatment through the PermeCapture system. Water is filtered from the surface down to collection in the StormCapture modules for controlled management. PermeCapture system applications include stormwater retention & harvesting, detention and ground water recharge.

TREATMENT

TREATMENT

Stormwater treatment options such as pretreatment, post-treatment, oil water separators and sandfilters are available as a stand-alone system, as well as integrated with StormCapture.

Oil Water Separators
Contamination of our water resources with hydrocarbons is an especially difficult problem to solve because of the widespread use of petroleum products. Oldcastle Precast offers two styles of oil water separators to intercept hydrocarbons in stormwater runoff, the generic baffled style for lower concentration areas, and, for hydrocarbon "hot spots" we provide separators that use enhanced coalescing plate technology and gravitation separation to improve the separation process and reduce the frequency of maintenance and cleaning.

Other Treatment BMPs
Oldcastle manufactures a variety of hydrodynamic separators for pretreatment, as well as a full line of filter systems for advanced treatment. Many of these treatment BMPs can be fully integrated within the StormCapture system.

Sandfilters
Sandfilters are proven technology that effectively removes pollutants from stormwater runoff after construction has been completed on a given site. Sandfilters are typically triple-chambered structures. The first chamber serves to pretreat the stormwater by allowing larger sediments to settle out and trapping some floatables. Pretreatment is critical in reducing maintenance frequency by removing some of the larger pollutants so that the filter bed will not become clogged quickly. The second chamber contains a filter bed comprised of sand, or other filter media, that will filter out finer particles and other pollutants. The third chamber is a clear well chamber for cleaned water prior to discharge. Each filter can be sized to match your application, thereby making best use of site conditions and providing best options for more efficient maintenance. Oldcastle offers both perimeter-style (at grade) and underground sandfilters. Our sandfilters feature a high-flow by-pass option and comply with underground structure requirements. Most can be installed in one day.

Typical pollutant percent removal rates for sandfilters listed by the U.S. EPA are:

  • TP 40-85%
  • TN 44-47%
  • Metals 25-90+%
  • Bacteria 55%
